I ask them questions about their families (immediate and extended), what they expect for themselves personally and professionally, hobbies and interests, general health condition, etc. After I learn about them, then we discuss investments - investment instrument knowledge or familiarity, time horizon, risk profile, asset base, future earnings, current investments. We also discuss investment parameters - what types of companies they would be interested in investing in, and those companies that they oppose.
